Application to the Indigenous Music Office's Leadership Program in Toronto, October 2025

Hey guys! Great news! I recently applied to the Indigenous Music Office's Leadership Program in Toronto, Ontario! I am super hopeful to get selected for this program, as this will help me boost my knowledge and skills to navigate through the industry as an artist. When I got selected to go to Vancouver for the Cultural Cadence program, I went in not as an artist, but as a music industry professional for my recording business.

I began recording sounds and music with an old cassette player I had as a kid. I would record songs off of the radio and make my own mix tapes, which is a common experience for anyone that grew up in the 80s/90s. From there, I got bold and began recording sound effects from movies, using the microphone from my small Panasonic cassette player. Jurassic park came out and I WAS HOOKED! The sound effects of my favorite creatures (Dinosaurs) were out of this world and I needed my own copies to play at my heart's content.

I figured hey, if I can record sound effects from Jurassic Park and make vocal edits on my own cassettes, I can probably create my own radio stations and comedy skits. My younger brother and my best friend became my co-hosts and we recorded our own skits of famous movies, tv shows and current events. Yeah, we got worse, but did we ever make ourselves laugh. We made our own sound effects and used other cassette tape players to create back ground music for our shows. I wish I still had copies of those tapes, as they were a huge part of my studio adventure.

I developed a taste for recording and continued to record while I was learning guitar and soon realised that I was able to produce my own music. Since 2001, I have been using DAWs like Sonic Foundary and Vegas Video to learn how to edit and mix. Since then, I have been recording, producing and releasing my own music. This is the entity I was blessed to go to Vancouver under. An Indigenous music Industry professional.

So, long story short, I hope to be selected for the Leadership Program as a music artist and to better develop my skills in the independent music industry. So yes, that is my rant today! Wish me luck!!
